What hands-off actually means
A self-emptying dock removes two jobs: emptying the dust bin and washing the mop pads. It does not remove the rest. This page lists what is left, so you can decide whether the higher price buys something you actually mind doing.
What the dock automates
A self-emptying dock does two jobs on its own: it empties the robot's dust bin into a bag in the dock, and usually washes the mop pads, often with hot water and a drying cycle. Those two jobs are the entire claim. Every other piece of upkeep still belongs to you.
What it never automates
- Replacing the dust bag. A full bag stops auto-emptying until you change it, and bags are a consumable the manufacturer sells separately.
- Cleaning or replacing the dock filter. It catches the fine dust, and a clogged one reduces suction until it is cleaned.
- Hair off the main roller. Anti-tangle brushes reduce how often this happens; none of them makes it zero.
- Side brushes, mop pads and the main brush eventually. All of these wear and are replaced on their own schedule, priced by the manufacturer.
- Clearing it when it gets stuck. Threshold claims, cables, socks and low furniture still catch robots. This is the most common reason a hands-off purchase disappoints.
What each model in this catalogue automates
Read from the manufacturers' own Australian pages on 2026-10-04. “Not published” means the manufacturer does not describe that function on their Australian page, not that the machine cannot do it.

Where the price of hands-off actually goes
In this catalogue the 1 model without a self-emptying dock starts at ECOVACS DEEBOT N20 PLUS at A$423. The 3 with a full-function dock start at ECOVACS DEEBOT T30S PRO PLUS at A$624, Dreame X50 Ultra at A$1,299, Dreame Matrix10 Ultra at A$1,999. That gap is not a quality difference — it buys back the weekly chore of emptying a bin and the rotation chore of washing pads. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on how much you dislike the chore, which is exactly the maintenance question the matcher asks.
This page describes what the manufacturers publish about their own machines. This site has not operated any of them, and the table is not a comparison of how well the docks work — only of which functions each one claims.
